Dr. Joel Ross
CEO of J & D Pharmaceuticals LLC
Dr. Joel Ross built the foundation for an exceptional medical career through rigorous academic training and a commitment to advancing patient care. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York, before obtaining his Doctor of Medicine degree from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. After medical school, he served as Chief Resident at Nassau County Medical Center, where he refined both his clinical and leadership skills.
A Pioneer in Geriatric Medicine
Dr. Joel completed his fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York under Dr. Robert N. Butler, the first Director of the National Institute on Aging. This experience prepared him to become one of the country's early leaders in geriatric medicine. He later became the first geriatrician to practice in New Jersey, helping establish the specialty while improving healthcare for older adults across the state through innovative clinical programs and physician education.
Leadership in Clinical Care and Medical Education
Dr. Joel was selected as the first Medical Director of the Anna Alexander Greenwall Geriatric Program at Monmouth Medical Center, an endowed leadership position that reflected his growing reputation. He also established and directed New Jersey's first geriatric fellowship program, mentoring physicians who later developed practices throughout the United States. His dedication to education earned him recognition as Teacher of the Year at Monmouth Medical Center for his outstanding contributions to medical training.
Dr. Joel later became Director of the Geriatrics Section within the Department of Internal Medicine at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, where he served for seven years. Throughout these leadership roles, he strengthened clinical standards, expanded educational opportunities, and advanced comprehensive care for aging populations. His expertise spans geriatric medicine, cognitive disorders, Alzheimer's disease, and a broad range of internal medicine conditions affecting older adults.
Advancing Alzheimer's Disease Research
Dr. Joel founded the Memory Enhancement Center of America in New York and New Jersey in 2000, creating specialized clinical research facilities dedicated to patients with cognitive disorders. Working alongside physicians, psychologists, pharmacists, nurses, and social workers, he helped provide advanced diagnostic evaluations, innovative treatment options, and compassionate support for individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and related conditions.
Dr. Joel and his multidisciplinary research team played a pivotal role in the development of every currently available FDA-approved oral medication and transdermal patch for Alzheimer's disease. Their clinical research significantly contributed to bringing these therapies to patients worldwide. He has also presented research findings at local, regional, national, and international conferences, including scientific meetings organized by the Alzheimer's Association, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications focused on neurodegenerative diseases.
Pharmaceutical Innovation Through J&D Pharmaceuticals
Dr. Joel Ross has combined decades of clinical experience with pharmaceutical innovation as founder and CEO of J&D Pharmaceuticals LLC in Monmouth, New Jersey. Earlier in his career, he also served as co-founder and CEO of RN NanoPharmaceuticals LLC. Through these ventures, he has focused on developing therapies for neurological disorders, rare diseases, and conditions with limited treatment options.
Dr. Joel and his research collaborators completed an animal study evaluating JD-005 for traumatic brain injury at the University of Oklahoma. The study demonstrated that the proprietary compound reduced acetylated tau levels while significantly improving neurological outcomes following head trauma. Building on these promising findings, he and colleagues at the University of Florida are conducting clinical research investigating acetylated tau as a biomarker for traumatic brain injury while preparing intravenous and oral formulations of JD-005 for future clinical trials.
Rare Disease Drug Development
Dr. Joel has guided J&D Pharmaceuticals toward important regulatory milestones through the development of JD-004 and JD-005. The United States Food and Drug Administration granted three Orphan Drug Designations recognizing the potential of these compounds to address serious rare diseases with limited treatment options. These designations reflect years of scientific research focused on improving outcomes for underserved patient populations.
Dr. Joel and his team received Orphan Drug Designation for Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, Progeria and related laminopathies, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Current research suggests these compounds may provide promising alternatives where existing therapies remain limited or present significant challenges. Animal studies continue for Progeria, while additional clinical research is expected for traumatic brain injury and liver cancer as development progresses.
Contributions to Clinical Research
Dr. Joel has remained deeply involved in advancing clinical research standards throughout his career. He previously served as a trustee on the Board of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals, where he helped strengthen research quality and investigator education. He also authored a nationally recognized booklet that serves as a practical guide for principal investigators conducting high-quality clinical research.
Dr. Joel continues to share his knowledge through scientific presentations, educational lectures, and published research. His work has contributed to a better understanding of Alzheimer's disease, neurodegeneration, cognitive disorders, and emerging therapeutic strategies. In addition to his extensive publication record, he also holds several patents that reflect his commitment to translating scientific discoveries into meaningful medical innovations.
Community Service and Lifelong Impact
Dr. Joel has devoted countless hours to serving underserved communities through volunteer medicine. At Parker Health Center in Red Bank, he and fellow healthcare professionals provide free medical care, testing, medications, and ongoing treatment for older adults, many of whom are undocumented immigrants facing chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and arthritis. Throughout nearly four decades of practice, he has delivered free healthcare services to thousands of individuals with limited access to medical treatment.
Dr. Joel Ross also educates the public through seminars on memory disorders, healthy aging, and CPR awareness. His dedication to emergency response was demonstrated during a pickleball tournament when he helped coordinate lifesaving CPR and defibrillation for a player who suffered cardiac arrest. The individual ultimately made a full recovery without neurological damage. Outside medicine, Dr. Ross has been happily married for nearly 47 years and is nationally recognized as the number one ranked men's doubles pickleball player in the 70 to 74 age division while also ranking among the country's top men's singles competitors.
